“Taiwan is not a province of China, Taiwan is Taiwan!” Michael Cooper, a Canadian MP, expressed his displeasure with China.

According to The Print, during a House of Commons inquiry session, Cooper questioned Minister of Health Jean-Yves Duclos about why the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), which funds health and medical research, mislabeled Taiwanese grant applicants as “Taiwan, a province of China.”

Cooper said he highlighted the CIHR mislabeling issue six months ago and wondered why it hadn’t been fixed. As reported by Taiwan News, he questioned Duclos on why he had failed to deal with Taiwan’s blatant mislabeling.

In June, Cooper presented the Canada-Taiwan Relations Basis Act as a legal framework for improving Canada-Taiwan relations.

Taiwan’s status is complicated because it rejects assertions that it is a part of the People’s Republic of China, has its constitution, has been administered freely since 1949, and passionately maintains its current democratic status.
